Habitat for Humanity of Wausau (HFH) will host an open house and home dedication on September 9, 2025 at 722 Jefferson Street in Wausau. An open house will be hosted from 5:00pm-7:00pm.  The community is invited to tour the home and celebrate the completion of HFH’s 74th home.  A short dedication ceremony will be held at 6:30pm.

Construction on the home began in September 2024 in a collaborative partnership between DC Everest High School Construction Trades class, led by Chad Pernsteiner and HFH Wausau. Habitat Wausau provides the plans, building materials, dwelling contractor license and oversite of the build process.  The school’s qualified instructor creates the curriculum, provides the instruction and oversees the student build.  Habitat Wausau has been investing in trades education with area schools in the Wausau area for nearly 20 years. 

After the students’ build portion of the project was complete, the home was transported and crane-set on the waiting foundation in May of 2025. HFH’s volunteer construction team, corporate partners, community volunteers and Women Build event volunteers worked through the summer to complete this home.

When families have safe affordable housing, they can create their own success.  Children who grow up in owned homes have improved grades, are more likely to graduate high school and 116% more likely to graduate college than children who grow up in rentals.

Habitat for Humanity of Wausau operates as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Since 1990, the Wausau organization has been committed to helping low-income families achieve their dream of home ownership. Families apply for the Home Ownership Program through a stringent screening process, verifying their ability to purchase their homes. HFH’s Program offers a non-profit mortgage enabling families to purchase their home, pay their property taxes, and insurance for monthly costs close to what they had been paying in rent.

Partner families repay a zero-interest mortgage, are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, live in the greater Wausau area for a least one year and pass a criminal background check.  Each partner family must complete 300 hours of sweat equity on their home and in the community. 

Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity of Wausau has completed 74 home builds in the Wausau community.  The Wausau Habitat ReStore has been the primary funding source for the Home Ownership program.  Retail store hours are Thursday and Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.  All proceeds from the Wausau Habitat ReStore support HFH Wausau’s home build program.
